Running a generator in cold weather

Canadian winters are when generators are needed most, and when they are hardest to run. A few habits make the difference.

Winter habits

Winter-grade fuel

Plain diesel can thicken in deep cold. Use winter-grade diesel for cold weather and tell us the conditions so the right fuel goes with the generator.

Cold starts

Diesel sets in the cold start more reliably with a block heater. Ask for one if the site is outdoors in winter.

Keep it clear of snow

Keep snow from blocking the air intake and exhaust. Use a proper canopy; keep the exhaust pointing away from any building.

Never move it indoors

A generator in a garage "to keep it warm" is a carbon monoxide risk. Read safety.

Check often

On long winter runs, check fuel level and exhaust clearance each time you refuel. An operator can do it for you.
